FTC State Championship at Lakeview High School, Battle Creek

January 10, 2015

It was an exciting day. We re-worked our presentation to work without Taha who was out of the country, while still including him. We pretended he was a "call in" participant and had Brian hide his face behind a photo of Taha and then discuss the topics Taha usually covers.

We were 3-3 for the day (4-3 if you include the match we played as a "surrogate team" to fill in for a no-show and make sure their alliance partner had a chance to compete for that round) and finished 12th for robot matches.

The big news came during the closing ceremonies when we learned that, out of 63 teams, we won the 3rd place Inspire Award! For those of you not familiar with all the different FTC awards, a team that wins the Inspire award:

"...is chosen by the judges as having best represented a 'role-model' FTC Team. This team is a top contender for all other judging categories and is a strong competitor on the field. The Inspire Award Winner is an inspiration to other teams, acting with Gracious Professionalism™ both on and off the playing field. This team is able to communicate their experiences, enthusiasm and knowledge to other teams, sponsors, and the Judges. Working as a unit, this team will have demonstrated success in accomplishing the task of creating a working and competitive robot....[an] Engineering Notebook must be submitted, and must include an Engineering Section, a Team Section and a Business or Strategic Plan. The entire Engineering Notebook must impress the judges."

We're getting ready for the Super Regional event in Des Moines, Iowa on March 26-28. We're taking a good look at what works well and what could be improved. We love our robot, LEEL, but he can always get better.

Here's what LEEL looked like for the tournament:

Stay tuned... you never know how LEEL might change for his trip to Iowa!
